Building Conversion | Rehabilitation
This former office building in chicago's Printers' Row was completely renovated to restore ground floor commerical space, and convert the second floor office into a primary residence. In order to do this successfully, we felt a simple but compelling theme based on the site's inherent characteristics needed to be generated, developed and implemented. The building faced due south with direct sunlight flooding the site during the day, yet the building's existing exterior windows were relatively small and the interior space needed more daylight in order to be converted into exceptional dwelling space. Following an 'addition by subtraction' philosophy, a central atrium was carved into the second story, adding not only the necessary daylight and ventilation but also a physical connection to the outdoors from almost every room in the residence. The atrium then became the main access to the grass roof, creating the unexpected as you ascend the atrium stair.
